Eating disorders are serious psychological conditions that affect millions of people in the U.S. According to research, approximately 9% of the U.S. population will experience an eating disorder in their lifetime.
Eating disorders currently found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders:
- Anorexia Nervosa
- Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder
- Binge Eating Disorder
- Bulimia Nervosa
- Other Specified Eating and Feeding Disorder
A common misconception is that eating disorders are easy to recognize or only affect individuals in smaller bodies, or that they primarily affect women. In reality, eating disorders do not discriminate—they impact people of all sizes, ages, genders, races, and socioeconomic backgrounds. If you find that food is a source of distress, control, or coping and occupies a significant part of your life, you could be affected.
While eating disorders are identified using diagnostic criteria from the DSM V, many individuals struggle with disordered eating. A 2018 study found that 58% of adolescent girls (aged 13-18) were engaging in practices in order to lose weight .
Disordered eating refers to a range of irregular eating behaviors that may not meet the criteria for a specific eating disorder, but may drastically impact an individual’s physical or mental health. These behaviors can include
- Chronic dieting
- Skipping meals
- Extreme focus on healthy eating
- Overeating
- Feeling guilty about food choices
Disordered eating can lead to harmful consequences over time, including emotional distress, poor body image, and potential physical health issues. At Fueling for Recovery, our team of professionals do not believe that one needs to get better at controlling their food intake. Instead, we take an exploratory and individualized approach to better help you understand where your food rules and beliefs come from and develop a relationship with food that is sustainable.
Using a Health at Every Size® approach, we prioritize all aspects of health and wellness beyond just weight. This doesn’t imply that everyone is at their ideal body weight for optimal health. Rather, we emphasize body diversity and focus on cultivating habits that enhance mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Our goal is to support individuals in developing a balanced, sustainable relationship with their bodies and health, irrespective of size.
Appropriate nutrition is as vital to an athlete’s performance as their sport-specific training. Tailoring nutrition to match an athlete’s sport, training cycle, and competition schedule is key to optimizing their overall performance and recovery.
Fueling for Recovery provides personalized nutrition education and counseling that aligns with the unique demands of each athlete’s reality. We strongly believe that by educating and supporting the athletes that we work with, we are able to empower them to feel confident and informed in meeting their body’s needs for training.
Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S), a concept introduced by the International Olympic Committee in 2014, highlights the critical issue of insufficient energy availability to meet the demands of both optimal health and athletic performance. This condition affects athletes of all genders and ages, often resulting from inadequate fueling relative to the energy expended in training and competition.
When athletes underfuel, it can have significant consequences on their physical health, including impaired bone health, weakened immune function, and hormonal disruptions. Mentally and emotionally, underfueling can lead to mood disturbances, fatigue, and reduced focus, all of which can hinder performance and overall well-being.
Our goal is to help you understand what is leading to RED-S and underfueling and accompany you in finding strategies to ensure that you’re fueling adequately for the demands of your sport. maintaining a healthy balance between energy intake and energy expenditure.
